In 2005, the Networking department was published a National Survey on 'Women and the Media in Cambodia' with the support of ActionAID International in Cambodia. This publication was necessary in providing a continuing effort to improve the participation and the presentation of women in the media, counteracting negative stereotypes and promoting positive and realistic portrayals of women.

WMC interviewed 952 people across 10 provinces and 2 municipalities to research the number of women working in the media and to review the educational and training opportunities for women in the media industry. This survey also aimed to profile women in the media industry, to identify the issues and concerns these women face and to record the perceptions the general public have towards women working in the media.

» Mobile Broadcasting Units (MBU’s)

Created in response to the enormous need to educate, inform and entertain rural villagers residing in “media black spots” in Cambodia, the WMC launched the first MBU team in 2002.

The MBU’s consist of two trained provincial facilitators who travel between remote communities, transporting audio-visual equipment including big screens, projectors and stereos which are used to broadcast info-tainment audio visual programs to rural villages.

WMC productions relate to rural audiences, reflecting the reality of people's lives and the circumstances they face, offering advice, support and vital information to assist families and communities. This information can be life changing. Some programs discuss HIV/AIDS awareness and maternity health care, which is so vital in rural villages with limited access to proper medical facilities or professional advice. While other WMC programs provide information on sex trafficking, rape, labor exploitation, offering warning signs, advice concerning the law and human rights and NGO support groups to help the most vulnerable communities in Khmer society.

MBU facilitators are able to encourage audiences to participate in discussing the issues presented, through the use of question and answer sessions after the broadcast has aired, which aids in reinforcing points in the programs and prompting community debate and discussion.

To date, MBU’s circulate among the three provinces ofOtdor Mean Cheay , Siem Reap and Kompong Chhang over an eight month period. The average audience size is approximately 150 villagers per broadcast.

The broadcasts take place at popular meeting places in each village, either in front of a pagoda, village leader's residence or held in a large communal space. The broadcasts air around 7pm, after the villagers return home from work and settle in for the evenings’ programs.
